An overwhelming 5,070 gallstones were removed from a 45 year old man at a hospital in Rajastan’s Kota. The news is making headlines in many a mainstream media.

The patient, Mohammad Shabbir is a grocery shop owner who has been suffering from stomach pains for the last three years. It was in mid-February that he decided to reach out to Dr Dinesh Jindal of Jindal Endo Laparoscopic Hospital in Kota, some 100 kilometers away from his hometown.

“Usually, between two and 100 gallstones are removed during a surgery. But 5,070 gallstones is certainly uncommon. The world record for the maximum number of gallstones recovered during a surgery belongs to Dr ML Saha from West Bengal. He had recovered 11,950 gallstones,” Dr Jindal said to the Hindustan Times.

According to Shabbir, the doctors said his not drinking enough water could be the reason for the disease.
Affirming the rarity of recovering this high a number of gallstones, Dr Pradyuman Goyal, assistant professor, general surgery, Government Medical College, Kota said, “We generally recover about 50 to 100 stones during a surgery. But this is unusual.”
