The new bill drafted by NITI Aayog has come under criticism from the Alliance of Doctors for Ethical Healthcare (ADEH)

Some key points the doctors raised include:

  • The bill promotes accelerated privatization and commercialization of medical education
  • By proposing that for-profit entities be allowed to start and run medical colleges, the bill legalized profiteering in medical education
  • The bill says that even colleges with grossly unsatisfactory standards wouldn’t immediately be closed down, instead they may just get a lower rating
  • The proposal for allowing private players to use district hospitals to run medical colleges is handing over key public health resources to business interests

The doctors suggested a regulatory body that will have a roughly equivalent representation from three constituencies- doctors, civil representatives, legal and public health experts along with nominated officials
