Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine 19th edition now available for download – What is new and changed
McGraw-Hill Education, the learning sciences company, announced the publication of the nineteenth edition of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine in February. The much awaited new edition is now available. The one sentence that can describe this new edition is “Tech heavy, but light in hand.”
Availablity – It is being shipped from the US since April 8th and will be available in India from May 1st.
Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine
The book is recognised as the most recognised book in the history of Medicine. The book is ready by almost all physicians and medical students. The book is considered to be the most authoritative in the field of medicine. The release of new edition and updates in the new edition will be watched closely by all of the medical fraternity.
What’s new?
The new nineteenth edition of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine is completely revised and provides an update of essential content related to disease pathogenesis, clinical trials, current diagnostics methods, evidence-based practice guidelines, and established and newly approved treatment methods.
Same two volumes but different approach
The new edition has been logically divided into two specialized volumes.
Volume one is intended primarily for students and covers essential foundational-level material on the basic principles underlying optimal patient care and assessment of signs and symptoms. It is a light book of only 465 pages that makes it easier for students to carry it with them and use during clinical rotations. The book focuses on the foundation of medicine and cardinal manifestation of diseases and is of vital importance to all students.
Volume two is dedicated to specific disease and the best evidence-based approaches to their management. It is thicker than before, but its availability on an iPad as an app will make reading it much easier.
DVD: Digital version has more than the book
Multimedia companion DVD, which comes along with the book is an essential part of every physician’s education, practice, and lifelong learning. It offers a variety of new features:
- The DVD allows one to preview two indispensable online medical resources, free ‘AccessMedicine’, featuring ‘Harrison’s Online’, and ‘ClinicalAccess Essentials’ with targeted answers to 120,000 clinical questions.
- It includes 137 additional chapters exclusively available on the DVD. They provide a deeper insight into essential medical education and clinical medical topics and over 500 additional images from imaging and clinical pathology.
- It also has more than 153 videos with step-by-step procedures performed at the bedside, covering important topics, such as sleep disorders, tissue engineering, and noninvasive cardiac imaging.
The digital heavy version might face some resistance as it offers many chapters only in digital version. This might not go down well with some physicians who still prefer reading in books over digital editions.
Entering into the app ecosystem
Harrison’s is also available as an eBook on multiple platforms and as an enhanced app developed especially for tablet and smartphone devices that offer high-definition resolution of multimedia content and interactive features, and as an updated online edition.
Also, the Atlas of cardiac arrhythmia is now available only online and through the app.
New Chapters and Updates
- The nineteenth edition features new chapters on established and emerging issues in clinical medicine and medical science, such as Men’s Health, Lung Abscess, Fatigue, and more.
- It includes many supplemental resources that reflect and assist modern medical practice. It is embellished with 1,000 full-color photographs, hundreds of radiographic examples spanning hundreds of diseases, color drawings and illustrations, and helpful tables and summary lists that make clinical application of the content faster than ever. Moreover, it also has an increased number of the renowned Harrison’s patient-care algorithms and practical demonstrative videos.
- Critical updates to landmark chapters includes, HIV and AIDS, Cancer Biology, Introduction to the Immune System, Multiple Sclerosis, Kidney Dialysis, and Chronic Hepatitis, Coronary Artery Disease, Ebola Virus Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Hypertension, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Lipoprotein Disorders, and many more.
