MLA performs surgery as the doctor was away, saves life
A Mizoram MLA performed a doctor’s duty on Wednesday by doing an emergency surgery on a women, since the surgeon at the hospital was away.
Dr K Beichhua, the MLA is an MBBS graduate from the Regional Medical College in Imphal. He decided to perform the operation when he least that the surgeon at the Saiha district hospital was not in the hospital-being at a training programme in Imphal.
He was told that a 35 year old woman was experiencing severe abdominal pain and was in need of immediate operation. It’s said that the woman had a large perforation on her stomach and if the operation wasn’t performed, she may have died. The MLA/doctor kept aside all his political engagements and rushed to the hospital.
The woman is said to be fine after the surgery. In fact, the MLA visited her on Thursday when he says she was laughing.
Dr Beichhua who is 52 years old finished his medical degree in 1991. He was a general practitioner for around 20 years after which he entered politics. He joined the Mizo National Front(MNF) in 2013.
According to the doctor, he has preformed hundreds of operations, though the last one was in December 2013.
According to N Chakhai, the officiating deputy commissioner of Saiha district, the doctor brought up the matter of the surgery at a meeting on Thursday when they were discussing about the shortage of doctors.
Even though the civil hospital in Saiha has seven doctors, the hospital has just one surgeon. The surgeon was away at Imphal, attending a training camp when the patient evolved complications, necessitating the operation.
