Medical student helps woman deliver in train, story gets widely lauded
The story of how a 24 year old final year MBBS student helped a lady deliver a baby on the Ahmedabad-Puri Express is being widely discussed by the public. The story has been carried in the leading newspaper, The Times of India.
Vipin Khadse helped the woman, with the help of instructions he received from his seniors via WhatsApp.
Khadse performed the complicated delivery when the 24 year old Chitralekha went into labour in the train on Friday.
No experienced doctor onboard
As Khadse told the Times of India, the train was around 30 km from Nagpur when the woman’s relatives pulled the chain to bring the train to a stop near the Wardha junction. “The ticket collector and guard were looking for a doctor on the train. Initially, I kept quiet presuming there could be some experienced doctor. But, when they came for a second round of inquiry, I offered to help,” he said.
Chitralekha, along with a husband got on the train at Ahmedabad where they work as laborers. Their destination was Raipur in Chattisgarh. She was bleeding profusely and was in a great pain when Khadse went to attend her. Most of the passengers vacated the compartment while the women passengers helped transform the compartment into a makeshift delivery room.
“The delivery was complicated because instead of the head, the baby’s shoulder was hanging out of the vagina. I uploaded a photo in a WhatsApp group of doctors for help. A senior resident Shikha Malik guided me on the phone to conduct the delivery,” Khadse said. “I had to use chilled water bottles to stop her bleeding. The amniotic fluid had completely dried. A midwife on the train helped me,” Khadse said that every doctor should know how to help a woman in labour.
Once the train reached Nagpur station, a team led by a lady doctor from the railway hospital took over. The couple-who just turned parents were allowed to continue their travel with medication.
