MCI declares certain PG courses as “illegal”
A circular issued by the Medical Council of India states that the postgraduate diploma in HIV Medicine, Health Management, Maternal and Child Health and Geriatric Medicine offered by IGNOU are illegal. The circular declared PG courses in emergency medicine offered by Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai and AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneshwar as illegal as well, advising all concerned “not to enroll themselves in such courses.”
The circular states that the courses haven’t got permission of the central government as is statutorily required under the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. Such qualifications are therefore not recognized. Those who hold such qualifications aren’t entitled to seek registration of additional qualification with the concerned medical council. Thus offering such post-graduate courses in modern medicine are illegal, says the circular.
Under the provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act 1956, prior permission of the central government is needed to establish a new medical college and also to impart courses in modern medicine. Permissions of the kind are granted by the Centre upon being recommended by the MCI.
The circular- dated September 28 also states explicitly that admissions made by admissions made by any institution which imparts courses in modern medicine without the prior permission of the central government is illegal.
