Doctors hit by patient’s relative by Iron Rod in KEM Hospital :
Resident doctors take beatings from patient relatives after death of a 3 year old Sufian. As a response to it resident doctors of King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) and the Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College have planned to boycott work on Monday as a sign of protest.
Abu Sufian a 3 year old boy bought to hospital at 11 pm on Thursday with no recordable pulse and blood pressure. Condition of the patient been clearly explained to the relatives and unavailability of beds in ICU was also notified.
Dr Sagar Mundada, president of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors has given insight while talking to “The indian express” said “We had also taken high risk consent. Inspite of non-availability of the ICU bed, relatives were ready to admit in general ward. All necessary medications were started”. At 4.45 pm Friday child succumbed to dengue shock syndrome following which the attack on residents ensued.
“Patient’s relatives then took up iron stool, iron rod and wooden stick lying in the ward and attacked our three residents who were in the ward. Since there was no action taken by the administration, absence of police complaint and lack of security of the doctors which has always been one of the major concerns we have decided to go on a strike.” Said Dr Sagar Mundada.
A week back death of 7 year old child from dengue after refusal private hospitals made into headlines. When there has been reported acts of violence from patient’s side it does not look surprising when hospitals turned town cases to protect their own interests rather taking risk admitting a serious case. As we can see in this scenario even keeping best intrests of patient gives no immunity from angry mob attacks on doctors
After all the attacks that has happened lately one would assume a hospital knows better than to appoint female guards in the name of safety who fled from the scene at the first opportunity.
We feel incredibly sad reporting incidents like this. Hope this will come to an end soon!
