Doctor returning from honeymoon successfully assists in delivering a baby when a passenger on board a flight goes into early labor
A doctor who was returning from her honeymoon ended up delivering a baby on an overseas flight when a fellow passenger went into early labor.
When Dr. Angelica Zen, resident physician at UCLA boarded her Air China flight from Taiwan to Los Angeles after her honeymoon she expected it to be a long but normal 19 hour flight back home. What she didn’t expect was a live test of her obstretrics skills 30,000 feet above ground level! She would soon become the doctor returning from her honeymoon who ended up delivering a baby when a fellow passenger went into early labor.
Dr. Zen who’s training is in internal medicine in pediatrics admitted she was nervous because her training did not deal with pregnant women. But as a doctor, she put in her best effort and with the flight crew standing in as nurses she helped deliever the baby. The whole plane erupted into applause as the lady gave birth to the child just 30 minutes before landing. Both baby and mother were healthy and happy. The flight headed to the nearest airport at Anchorage, Alaska where the Civil Aeronautics Administration confirmed that the baby’s nationality would depend on the birth certificate issued by the Anchorage hospital as she was born in U.S. airspace aboard a Chinesse passenger plane.
Great Work Doctor Zen!
DAILY ROUNDS community congratulates Dr. Zen on being resourceful and having the presence of mind to carry out the procedure calmly and ensuring both lives were safely taken care of! This is an example of how doctors continue to impress and deliver good patient care the world over, everywhere and at any time. This is good motivation for fellow doctors to stay positive, passionate and know that they are important to society at all times.
