Delhi doctors remove the world’s heaviest tumour, going for Guinness
Doctors at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi has recently removed a kidney tumour, which they claim to be the world’s heaviest kidney tumour. It weighed 6.48kg and was 29cm in length.
The 50-year-old patient from Bareilly came to RML two months back with his abdomen swollen up significantly on the left side and mild pain. Further examinations revealed the presence of a tumour and they planned surgical removal. However, the doctors realised the size of the tumour only after they cut open his chest and abdomen. “It was so big that it had displaced the intestines to the right side of the patient’s body and other structures in his abdomen —liver, stomach and spleen — were also compressed,” said Dr Umesh Sharma, assistant professor in the urology department at RML. It took nearly four and a half hours to remove the mass along with some of the lymph nodes.
As per the existing records, the heaviest kidney tumour removed so far weighed 5.5 kilograms. The surgery was conducted by Dr Ajit Sawant of Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital on November 7, 2016. AIIMS doctors have removed a kidney tumour which weighed 5.1kg in 2015.
“We have sent the details to the Guinness Book of World Records or official confirmation,” added Dr Sharma.
Kidney tumours usually weigh less than one kilogram. Heavy tumours are rare. Since the bigger and heavier ones are often cancerous, had to ensure that the mass is removed completely. “The patient is recovering well and we plan to discharge him in a day or two,” said the doctor.
