The heartbreaking image of an emergency room doctor grieving after he failed to save his 19-year-old patient has gone viral. Initially posted in the Facebook by one of his friend has been reposted in Reddit, where it has received more than 4000 upvotes and was also posted in Imgur. The friend, who works as a technical assistant to the said doctor in the picture says losing patients who are old or sick are common. And adds “the present case was of a 19-year-old boy and these were the type of cases that hits us hard, but the doctor held his composure back within few minutes”. The image shows the human nature of the doctors and the grief that they have to undergo under such circumstances.
The post poured in a lot of sympathies from both the general public and the medical fraternity. One user recalled his sympathetic experience with doctors after he lost his father and claims “Doctors do not get the praise they deserve”. The opinion is true as the health care is so much of a business now that the emotions of a doctor are rarely addressed.
Another user, a medical professional working in an ER shared a sense of connection with the grieving doctor. He added, “moments like these make him feel proud of his career choice despite the hardship of being an ER physician.”
The high levels of stress associated in working with emergency care and the daily grief of going through death may cause some physicians to look like they have no emotions. But in the end, they are human beings who would have all the emotions as others.
The tight and stressful ER conditions expose doctors to such heartbreaking deaths frequently. Every time the death occurs, we find only to see the patient’s side. But this image on shows the other side, which all of us would rarely see.
