AIIMS Doctor gets justice: Guard who attacked doctor suspended within 24 hours

No this isn’t a TV drama playing out..its a real life incident that took place at AIIMS! This isn’t the first time an on duty doctor is being assaulted but a shocking first as the very security guard who was hired for doctors safety ended up attacking a doctor! The incident occurred when,a doctor in the radiology department of AIIMS was slapped by a security guard for not conducting an ultrasound for his father.
Here’s how it played out –
Dr. Pawan Kumar was on duty when security cum fire guard Roshan Lal Bhati brought in his father with a KUB (kidney urinary bladder) ultrasound request. upon examination, it was noticed that he was leaking urine and the doctor suggested that Bhati go back to the consulting doctor. He gave Bhati his phone number and asked him to call him from the consulting doctor’s office for any clarification
It was now that Bhati lost his cool despite Dr. Kumar explaining why he couldn’t conduct the scan! Calling a fellow guard to his aid..he insisted then forcefully persuaded, abused and finally slapped Dr. Kumar ! That was the final straw…Dr. Kumar reported the incident to the local police station and filed an FIR against Bhati for his attack.
AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the accused. Almost immediately after Dr. Kumar’s filing of the FIR, security guard Roshan Lal Bhati was suspended. This is a victory for doctors all over as Dr. Kumar’s statement was duly noted, considered and the strictest action levied against the offender.

While government hospitals deploy anywhere from 10-15 home guards during peak hours to prevent aggression against doctors, it is ironic in this case that the very same guard who was posted in the hospital to protect,attacked a doctor!
Doctors safety now seems to have hit a new low with this incident. However, the speedy action taken in favor of the doctor is commendable and a source of relief to the medical community in light of various stories of violence against doctors. Hope and prevails for the medical community!
