Bhakti Yadav is a name that’s not that popular among the medical fraternity, and that’s quite a shame. Because the 91 year old gynaecologist is responsible for providing literally thousands of free deliveries and medical help to the needy. The nation finally woke up to the doctor’s contributions and awarded her a Padma Sri award this year.

Dr Yadav is based in Indore. In fact, she is the first female MBBS doctor from the city. She has been treating patients for free since 1948.

She was born in the Mahidpur town of Ujjain district in 1926 and completed her schooling in Indore. She graduated from MGM Medical College in 1948. In fact, she was the only woman in her batch. She rejected a job offer from a government hospital and joined Nandlal Bhandari Maternal Home so that she could treat the wives of the poor cloth mill workers. She headed the maternity home for decades before starting her own nursing home in Pardeshipura- aptly named ‘Vatsalya.’

Old but not out

Though old, the doctor still helps those in need. It’s her wish to be able to provide help till her last breath. The doctor believes that bringing a personal touch to the treatment of her patients is what makes her feel alive. She is of the opinion that many doctors lack this personal touch- an aspect which, for all practical purposes, could feel like magic to patients.

The doctor was recently approached by many patients who suffer from infertility. Many of them were treated successfully.

As for her winning the Padma Sri, the doctor’s words, spoken to The Times of India, are illustrative of her passion to help: “I am happy that everyone is happy (with the announcement). What is important is that people get benefitted with my actions”.
