3 doctors in Chattisgarh have been suspended for indulging in unethical practice by the Chattisgarh Medical Council. Their suspensions have been for taking advantage of medical jaunts from pharma companies and violating self-advertising code of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The Registrar of the Council, Dr. Srikant Rajimwala commented that this action was being taken to serve prevent other doctors from indulging in such actions.

Dr. Tarun Mishra an Endocrinologist’s registration has been suspended for a month after he was found going on foreign trips offered by pharmaceutical companies who lure doctors to boost drug sales. Another government doctor, Rajiv Chandrakar was also found guilty of a similar offense and action was being taken against him as well based on the department’s rules.

Two other doctors – Dr Susheel Sharma and Dr Manoj Chellani found their licenses suspended for a week for violating Section 6.1.1 and 6.1.2 of the MCI’s code of medical ethics, which debars doctors from advertising “himself or herself alone or with other docotrs”

It is good to see individual state governments focus on ethical medical practice and keeping tabs on how doctors are functioning. Ensuring legal and ethical medical practice by enforcing rule position of the MCI is a good step that keeps doctors in check from doing anything illegal. This also allows ethically practicing doctors to have hope and be assured that their methods and adherance to the law is being taken seriously.
