Severed hand, grafted to leg
Doctors at Xiangya Hospital in China have successfully re-implanted a severed hand. The patient had lost his hand due to a workplace injury a month back. He was then rushed to a local hospital, from where he was transferred to Xiangya Hospital. The surgeons could not reattach the severed limb on the first attempt due to the severity of the injury, so doctors chose to attach the severed hand to his ankle in a 10 hour surgery.
The hand remained at the ankle for a month to allow the hand to heal and recover from trauma, preventing any nerve and tissue damage.A month after the first surgery his hand was reattached to his wrist in another long surgery. He now has slight movement is his reattached hand, and hopes to regain full functionality and range of motion in due course of time.
